All over the world teachers are getting ready for their first day of school. There’s excitement, and nerves, and lots of preparation and planning. I love it when teachers focus on classroom community from the start. It’s what I believe makes the rest of the year more fun, productive, and loving.
I wrote this song in honor of my wife Heather and all the teachers about to begin the journey of a school year. Heather is an amazing educator, and she is returning to the classroom after nearly twenty years of being a principal, college professor, and non-profit director, among other things. The kids in her class are very lucky, and I’m so proud of the energy and commitment she will bring to her school.
The idea behind this song is that teachers can put in their own verses, maybe creating them with kids. Ideally there are three rhymes in the verse, but you can skip those if you want.
Thanks to Tom Pease for his always helpful guidance and observation in this song. Only making it better.
Chorus We’re gonna get to know each other
Get a little closer
Pretty soon we will be
A classroom family.
Verse We’ve got the new math books, all stacked.
Got the bulletin boards, all tacked.
Got school supplies in our backpacks
We’re ready, we’re ready…
