Despite the fact that it’s snowing outside on April 10, spring is here. Two days ago it was 70 degrees. Dodger and I went walking and this song appeared. I sang it the next day at a celebration for Week of the Young Child and the call and response nature of it made it work well with young kids. Thanks to David Stokes for naturalist advice.
I sing it as a call and response, except for the last line. I add sign language for welcome and spring to the last line. You can also omit the bridge in performance to keep the singing flow going.
Welcome Spring (The Birds Come Back)
The birds come back it’s a beautiful thing
The birds come back on wind and wing.
The birds come back. You can hear them sing
We say, “Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Spring.”
The birds come back. It’s a beautiful thing
They build their nests. With sticks and string
The birds come back with the joy they bring
We say, “Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Spring.”
Hawks and cranes and orioles
On their ancient routes
Vultures and robins and tanagers
Make their way up from the south.
We’ve waited here all winter long.
The grass gets green. The sun gets strong.
The birds come back. Let the whole world ring.
We say, “Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Spring.”
