We talk a lot about love. What is it? What are the different kinds? Why does it come and go? What makes love last? What does it mean to have a partner? And who gets to decide?
In part, I am outraged by the right wing’s continued assault on love. Just when you think that battle is won they come back again with discriminatory practices in the name of religion, and overall hate speech that permeates the electronic channels. And then there is the deeper truth and mystery of love in all its forms. Who can understand it? Better to accept it as a gift. Some songs take a long time and have a strange genesis. This one began in the Brussels airport and came to rest over the last few weeks.
You Love Who You Love
You love who you love
You love who you love
You can change your mind about a thousand times
But you love who you love
You love who you love
You love who you love
You can make a list of who you’ve kissed
But you love who you love
Love may be like gravity
A force you must obey
Just one sip and you’re in its grip
All night and day
It will hold you like a velvet glove glove
In the end I say my friend
You love who you love
You love who you love
You love who you love
Your family might not agree
But you love who you love
You love who you love
You love who you love
It makes no sense in the present tense
But you love who you love
You may love across the aisle
Or someone with similar parts
What you feel will not reveal
The reason in your heart.
Destiny, psychology
Or a bolt from up above
In the end I say my friend
You love who you love.
You love who you love
You love who you love
It’s in your veins not in your brain
But you love who you love
