I spent a week working in Lafayette, Louisiana in November. I love the city and the feeling of culture there. The Acadiana Center for the Arts is a wonderful asset in the region and they coordinate visiting artists to schools and workshops for teachers.
I wrote this song just taking in the aura of the Atchafalaya Swamp, where I took a boat tour. Lots of cypress, alligators, and mystery.
Livin on the levee. Let the good times roll.
Water’s gonna lift my alligator soul.
Living on the levee all my people close.
Spanish moss is hanging like my great grandaddy’s ghost..
In a dark little corner of the cypress south
Momma put her hand around on a cottonmouth.
Loaded up on Jesus and some good home brew
She said, you got to sing got to shout got to jump got to dance
when the spirit comes over you.
Living on the levee bayou in my blood.
Fiddle in the moonlight. Crawdads in the mud.
